You know, there’s just something about autumn that makes my heart sing. I mean, who doesn’t love the crisp air, cozy sweaters, and the stunning explosion of colors? So, when I heard the leaves were hitting their peak in Hachimantai, Naeba, and Kamikochi, I just had to pack my bags and see them for myself.
Hachimantai: A Road Through a Sea of Colors
Let’s start with Hachimantai in Iwate. I jumped in my car and headed down the Aspite Line, a mountain road famous for its breathtaking views. Each twist and turn revealed a new canvas of red and gold. Honestly, I felt like I was driving through a living painting. The best part? It’s free! Just the gas to get there. But hey, you might want to bring a little extra for a snack or two. Trust me, the mountain air makes you hungry!
Naeba: A Sky-High Adventure
Next stop was Naeba in Niigata, where I hopped on the Dragon Gondola. It’s the longest gondola ride in Japan, spanning 5.5 km (around 3.4 miles). The views were insane! Picture it: vibrant foliage stretching out as far as the eye can see. Not gonna lie, I was a bit freaked out by the height, but the beauty was worth every second of vertigo. It costs ¥3,500 (about $23 USD) for adults, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Kamikochi: Serenity in the Mountains
Finally, Kamikochi in Nagano stole my heart. It’s a bit of a trek to get there, but standing on the Kappa Bridge with the Azusa River reflecting the golden leaves was pure magic. I wandered along the riverbank, taking about a thousand photos—each one more stunning than the last. If you go, try to visit early in the day to avoid the crowds. And bring a jacket; it gets chilly up there!
So, what did I learn from this whirlwind tour? Well, autumn in Japan is a feast for the senses. If you’re like me and love to dive headfirst into a new adventure, this is one trip you can’t miss. If you’re thinking of going, do it! I’d love to hear your stories when you get back.
