Chasing Autumn Colors: My Weekend Foliage Adventure in Kanto

EyeCatchTitle: Chasing Autumn Colors: My Weekend Foliage Adventure in Kanto Chubu

You know that feeling when you can’t wait for the weekend to just escape the city hustle? Last Saturday, I decided to do just that and chase some autumn foliage in the Kanto region. I mean, who can resist the allure of vibrant reds and yellows dancing in the crisp autumn air? Not me, that’s for sure.

I hopped on an early train from Tokyo, armed with my trusty camera and a thermos of steaming coffee. My first stop? Fukuroda Falls in Ibaraki. I had heard rumors about its stunning beauty during the fall, but let me tell you, standing there in front of the cascading water framed by fiery foliage, I literally gasped. The view from the first observation deck was amazing, but taking the elevator up to the second deck to see the waterfall in full glory? Totally worth the extra yen.

As the morning sun started to warm things up, I headed over to Shiohara Onsen in Tochigi. The combination of the gentle sound of the river and the sight of the colorful leaves surrounding the hot springs was just magical. If you ever find yourself there, don’t miss the Kurenai Suspension Bridge. Standing on it, surrounded by nature’s grand palette, I felt like I was in a painting.

And speaking of surprises, I didn’t expect to find myself munching on a local specialty, yuba, at lunchtime. It’s this delicate tofu skin dish that’s as silky as it is delicious. A perfect meal to fuel the rest of the day’s adventures.

Around mid-afternoon, I made my way to Fukiware Falls in Gunma. The locals call it the ‘Niagara of the East,’ and it didn’t disappoint. The sound of the water crashing down amidst the colorful backdrop was both soothing and invigorating. I wandered the trails, camera in hand, capturing memories and moments. Just a heads-up though, it gets a bit chilly, so pack a warm jacket!

As the day wrapped up, I found myself reflecting on the day’s adventures. Each place had its charm and left me with a sense of awe and gratitude for nature’s beauty. If you’re considering a leaf-peeping trip this season, Kanto is definitely the place to be. Just remember, Saturdays are your best bet for clear skies and vibrant colors.

So, next time you’re in Japan during autumn, why not take a little detour from the usual tourist spots? Trust me, these hidden gems are worth every minute. And if you do go, I’d love to hear your stories!
