Hey there! So, I recently found myself in Wakayama, and let me tell you, chasing cherry blossoms here is an experience I won’t forget. Imagine strolling through a park with thousands of sakura trees in full bloom—it’s like walking through a pink wonderland!
Wakayama Castle was my first stop. The sight of approximately 450 cherry trees blooming against the backdrop of the ancient castle is simply breathtaking. I literally gasped when I saw the shidare-zakura (weeping cherry) at the Ichinohashi Bridge—it’s a view that stays with you.
Why Wakayama?
So, why did I choose Wakayama? Honestly, I was curious about its reputation for early blooming sakura. Places like Kimiidera Temple are known for their early blossoms, and I couldn’t resist the charm of walking up the temple steps surrounded by pink petals.
And the weather? Oh, the perfect spring chill! It wasn’t too crowded either—just enough people to make it lively but not overwhelming. I visited during the last week of March and the blossoms were just starting to bloom, with full bloom expected by early April. If you’re planning a trip, aim for late March to early April for peak beauty.
Must-See Spots
- Kimiidera Temple: Known for early blooms and stunning views of Wakaura Bay.
- Wakayama Castle: A perfect blend of history and nature.
- Kameike Park: A serene spot with a picturesque walking path around the pond.
One thing that surprised me? The night view. Places like Danjo Castle Park light up the sakura trees, creating a magical atmosphere that feels straight out of a fairy tale. You have to see it to believe it.
Quick budget tip: Most of these spots are free to enter, but I did spend around ¥1,000 (about $7 USD) on snacks and souvenirs. Worth every yen!
As much as I love Tokyo, this was a refreshing escape. Sure, it’s not for everyone. Some might find it too quiet, but if you enjoy a peaceful stroll with nature, Wakayama’s cherry blossoms are a must-see. If it sounds fun, go for it—I’d love to hear what you think.
