So there I was, standing amidst a sea of red and gold, my heart pounding with excitement. Autumn in Japan is like stepping into a painting, and no matter how many times I experience it, I’m always left in awe. This time, I decided to embark on a journey from Honshu to Kyushu, chasing the vibrant colors of the season.
Let me tell you, the anticipation was real. As the Japan Meteorological Association predicted, the leaves were taking their sweet time to blush this year. But honestly, that just added to the thrill. I kicked off my adventure in Nikko, a place that’s practically synonymous with stunning autumn foliage. The crisp air and the sound of leaves crunching underfoot—I was in my happy place.

From there, I made my way to Kyoto. Now, if you’ve never seen Kyoto in autumn, you’re seriously missing out. The temples and gardens look like they’ve been sprinkled with magic. I visited Kiyomizu-dera right before sunset, and the way the golden leaves glowed in the fading light? I literally gasped. It was like nature’s own light show.
Next stop, Kyushu. I took a scenic train ride to Mount Aso, where the landscape was a patchwork of colors. It’s not all about the reds and yellows, you know. The greens and browns add depth and richness to the scene. Plus, you can’t beat the feeling of standing on a volcano. I shared it on WhatsApp before I even got home, lol.

One thing to keep in mind: the weather can be unpredictable. I got caught in a sudden shower near Kumamoto, but it only added to the adventure. Just make sure to pack a raincoat. Also, a little budget tip for you: entrance fees to most of these spots are around ¥1,000 (about $7 USD), so they won’t break the bank.
Not gonna lie, this journey was one for the memory books. Every sight, every breath of fresh autumn air was worth it. If it sounds fun, go for it—I’d love to hear what you think. Just remember, don’t rush. Let the colors find you.
