You know what? I always thought winter was just about staying indoors with a hot cup of cocoa. But then I stumbled into Shimane during the colder months, and boy was I wrong! Imagine soaking in a steamy onsen with snowflakes gently falling around you. I literally gasped the first time I tried it!
The Heartwarming Onsens of Shimane
Shimane is like this secret treasure chest of onsens. I hit up the famous Tamatsukuri Onsen, and it was pure bliss. The locals say it’s one of the best for your skin, and I must admit, my skin felt like butter afterward. It’s the kind of place that makes you forget your worries. Just lay back and let the warm waters do their magic!
Crab Feast Like No Other
Okay, so I had this craving for seafood and ended up at this local spot in Matsue. They had this event called “Kani Ichi” where you can feast on fresh crab, and let me tell you, it was divine! The crab was so fresh, it felt like a party in my mouth. It’s around ¥3,000 (about $20 USD), but totally worth every yen.
Chill Vibes at the Aquarium
And for the animal lovers, the Shimane Aqua Museum is a must-visit. I saw belugas for the first time, and they were adorable! Plus, there’s this winter-exclusive Penguin Parade. Watching those little guys waddle around was a highlight of my trip.
Warm Up with Some Sake
Oh, and the sake! Shimane is known for its sake, and I visited a couple of breweries. The aroma, the taste—it was an experience. They even let you taste a few for free, and I ended up buying a bottle to take home. If you’re in the area, pop into a brewery and explore the rich flavors. You might just find your new favorite drink!
Honestly, Shimane in winter is not just about the cold. It’s about warm experiences, tasty food, and unforgettable sights. If you ask me, I’d say give it a shot. Who knows, you might fall in love with winter all over again. And hey, if you do visit, drop me a message—I’d love to hear what you think!
