Okay, so I have to admit, Shizuoka wasn’t exactly at the top of my travel bucket list. But, boy, was I in for a surprise! You know how sometimes you just need a change of scenery? That was me, itching to escape Tokyo’s hustle and bustle. I hopped on the Shinkansen with nothing but a camera in hand and a couple of onigiri in my bag—because who knows when you’ll find food, right? And there I was, heading to Shizuoka, hoping to catch some of that famous Mount Fuji magic.
Exploring the Tea Fields
First stop, the lush green tea fields of Shizuoka. Honestly, I never knew tea could be this captivating. Rows upon rows of vibrant green spread out like a masterful painting. The air was crisp and carried a faint, earthy aroma of fresh tea leaves. I took a deep breath, and I swear, it was like inhaling tranquility. I could have stayed there forever, just soaking in the peaceful vibes. The best part? You can take a tea-picking tour for about ¥2,000 (around $14 USD), and yes, I gave it a shot. Spoiler: I’m not quitting my day job anytime soon!

Mount Fuji Views that Stole My Heart
Next on my agenda was catching a glimpse of Mount Fuji. And let me tell you, seeing it up close is a whole different ballgame. I headed to Nihondaira, this amazing viewpoint that promises a panoramic vista of Mount Fuji. It was a clear day, and there it stood, majestic and serene. I literally gasped—I mean, how could you not? It felt surreal, like stepping into a postcard. If you’re planning a visit, try going in winter when the skies are clearest.
While I was there, I stumbled upon a local market selling fresh produce and handmade crafts. I treated myself to a matcha ice cream, which was divine, by the way. It was ¥500 (about $3.50 USD), and worth every yen! I even bought a small Fuji keychain for ¥300 (around $2 USD) as a keepsake. Oh, and I couldn’t resist sharing a few snaps on Instagram. My mom was thrilled—I think she’s planning her visit now, haha.

My Little Confession
Not gonna lie, I messed up a bit on this trip. I underestimated how much there is to see in Shizuoka. I barely scratched the surface! And honestly, the place surprised me in the best way possible. If you’re anything like me, craving a mix of nature and culture, Shizuoka should definitely be on your list. Just remember to pack a good pair of walking shoes—your feet will thank you later.
If this sounds like your kind of adventure, give it a go. And if you do, let me know—I’d love to hear your thoughts! Who knows, maybe I’ll tag along next time. Just not in the summer, because the heat, oh boy, it’s something else!
