So, there I was, staring at the map like a total newbie. Tokachi? Obihiro? Honestly, I didn’t even know where to start! But let me tell you, the moment I decided to hop on a plane to Hokkaido, I knew I was in for a treat.
Oh, and the landscape? It’s like stepping into a living painting. I mean, I literally gasped when I first saw the patchwork fields and sprawling dairy farms under the clear blue sky. It’s a sight that makes you feel both tiny and incredibly alive.
The Magic of Tokachi’s Landscapes
First stop, the Mikuni Pass Observatory. This place is no joke. You’re greeted with a panoramic view of lush green forests and the stunning arch of Matsumi Ohashi Bridge. I swear, I spent a good hour just soaking it all in.
Then there’s the Naitai Highland Farm. Imagine standing atop a hill, surrounded by endless fields, with the Tokachi Plains stretching out beneath you. It’s the kind of spot where time just seems to stand still.
Adventures and Surprises
Okay, so I thought I was prepared for the hot air balloon experience, but boy, was I wrong. Floating above the landscape at sunrise—it’s surreal. And the best part? It’s only around ¥25,000 (about $170 USD). Totally worth it for that once-in-a-lifetime view.
And speaking of surprises, I stumbled upon the Bear Mountain Safari Park at Sahoro Resort. Ever been face-to-face with an Ezo brown bear? Let’s just say, it’s thrilling in a “I’m glad there’s glass between us” kind of way!
Taste the Tokachi Flavor
You can’t visit Tokachi without indulging in the local food. I mean, the pork bowls (buta don) are legendary. Think thick slices of pork glazed in a sweet and savory sauce—drool-worthy, to say the least! And don’t get me started on the cheeses and sweets. Just take my advice: try everything.
Oh, and if you’re into quirky experiences, try a sauna with an icy twist. Some places even let you dip into a frozen lake. It’s invigorating, to say the least.
So, if you’re looking for vast landscapes that make you feel tiny, food that hugs your taste buds, and adventures that get your heart racing, Tokachi-Obihiro is calling your name. If it sounds fun, go for it—I’d love to hear what you think. Not gonna lie, I’d totally go back—just not in August next time.
