Oh, the magic of fall in Japan! I didn’t think I’d be this excited about leaves, but here we are. I had one of those impulsive moments, you know? The kind where you’re scrolling through Instagram on a rainy Tokyo day and suddenly decide, ‘I need to see some serious autumn vibes’. And let me tell you, Kanto doesn’t disappoint!
Okunikko, Tochigi
First stop: Okunikko in Tochigi. Getting there was a bit of a hassle, not gonna lie. But as my bus climbed the winding Irohazaka roads, the air got crisp and I could smell the pine. By the time I reached Ryuzu Falls, I was wrapped in autumn hues so vibrant, I literally gasped. The reds and yellows were like nature’s fireworks. And the best part? Late October is the sweet spot for catching these colors at their peak.

Ikaho Onsen, Gunma
Next up was Ikaho Onsen in Gunma. There’s something about soaking in a hot spring surrounded by fiery red leaves that’s pure bliss. The Kajika Bridge, with its picturesque views, looks like it’s straight out of a postcard. And if you’re there late October to early November, you’ll catch the enchanting night illuminations. I almost forgot I was in the middle of a bustling onsen town!
Oh, and if you’re wondering about costs, a day at the onsen can set you back about ¥1,500 (around $10 USD), but it’s worth every yen.
Fukuroda Falls, Ibaraki
Lastly, I couldn’t skip Fukuroda Falls in Ibaraki. This place is famous for a reason. Imagine a waterfall cascading down in four stages, flanked by trees that look like they’re ablaze. I swear, it felt like being in an epic fantasy movie! Early to mid-November is when the foliage is at its finest.
So, if you’re itching for some adventure this fall, Kanto is calling. It’s a bit of a trek from Tokyo, but honestly, the vibrant colors and tranquil vibes make it totally worth it. Just pack a jacket—it gets chilly up in those mountains!
Not gonna lie, I’m already planning my next leaf peeping trip. If it sounds fun, go for it—I’d love to hear what you think!
