I was initially just planning a casual weekend escape from Tokyo, but this turned into a vibrant, fluffy adventure I didn’t see coming!
What Exactly is Kokia?
Kokia are these quirky, fluffy bushes that transform dramatically with the seasons. In summer, they’re a vibrant green, but come autumn, they turn into a stunning fiery red. It’s like nature’s very own fireworks display! As someone who loves snapping pics, I was totally in my element. 
The Best Spots to See Kokia
So, where can you find these beauties? I decided to go all-in and visit a few famous spots across Japan. First stop: Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki. This place is a kokia wonderland! Picture this: rolling hills of red bushes as far as the eye can see. I literally gasped when I saw it. The entrance fee is about ¥450 (around $3 USD), which is quite a steal for such a view.
Next, I hopped over to Sera Kogen Farm in Hiroshima. It’s a bit out of the way, but hey, I love a good road trip. This farm also hosts gorgeous fields and offers a more tranquil vibe compared to the bustling crowds at Hitachi. Perfect for a laid-back afternoon stroll.
Timing is Everything!
If you’re keen on catching kokia at their peak, aim for mid-October. Trust me, the colors are simply breathtaking. But here’s a tip—check the weather before you go. I made the rookie mistake of not checking, and ended up caught in a drizzle. My hair was not happy! 
Bus Tours—A Convenient Option
If you’re not up for driving, there are plenty of bus tours that whisk you away to these kokia spots. They’re pretty handy, especially if you want to sit back and enjoy the scenery without worrying about directions.
